I am Jennifer from Northeast Ohio, where I work as a hospital based Certified Pharmacy Technician. My husband and I have five children, aged 2 to 23. I learned to sew in junior high Home Economics class. I remember making a patchwork pillow, where each square was sort of trapunto-style stuffed from behind. The second year we made a jumper that was way too ugly and out of style to wear. But, I didn't care. It was the process that I liked and I was happy to be learning to use the sewing machine!
I didn't have my own sewing machine, so I didn't sew again until I got married and bought an $89 Singer sewing machine at Sears. It was a good bargain. I continued using it to sew household items and children's clothing for the next 20 or so years. It never quit working. My dog chewed up the cord and to buy a new cord for such an old machine was not as economical as just buying a new one.
I've had several false starts at quilt making over the years. Quilt tops have been abandoned after just a few pieces were sewn or even with almost all the rings for a large Wedding Ring quilt sewn. I think I stuck that somewhere during a move and when I discovered it later, I just sold the pieces at a garage sale. As you can imagine, there isn't much time for "me time" with such a busy household and I've let myself be defeated at times. Now that I'm getting older, I see that spending time doing things I enjoy are really necessary for not losing it completely.
A dedicated space to work is my other issue. No sewing room here...there's someone sleeping in all my rooms. Having to move everything off the kitchen table makes it a lot more difficult. I hope to create a space somewhere I can leave things and come back to them later. Anyway, besides my adolescent sewing classes, I have absolutely no quilting experience whatsoever. So have a good laugh with me as I try to figure it out!
